The World Health Organization advises us to eat less salt. How do you do that?
Recommended Quantity
Adults should consume less than 2 grams of sodium or 5 grams of kitchen salt, as well as 3.51 grams of potassium to reduce the risk of heart disease and brain haemorrhage.
Too much
The last advice on eating salt was issued in 2006, when it was recommended to eat no more than 6 grams of salt per day. We are well over that amount. On average, women eat 7.5 grams of salt per day. Men eat 9.9 grams of salt a day.
Eating less salt:how do you do that?
– Do not add extra salt to your food. You can optionally replace salt with herbs.
– Taste a bite of your food first, you may not need to add salt at all.
– Use fresh vegetables more often.
– Bread contains a relatively large amount of salt . You can opt for a low-salt variant.
– Avoid products with a lot of salt, such as:ready meals, smoked meat, salami, raw ham, cheese, ready-made soups and sauces, savory snacks, pretzels and chips.
– Check the labels of products you use. Sometimes salt is listed as sodium. The less there is, the better. Compare different brands. 1 gram of sodium is 2.5 grams of salt!
