The integration of foreign dishes in the Netherlands goes smoothly. From spaghetti bolognese to goulash. We regularly eat foreign dishes, but we don't always know where the dishes really come from.
In the television program De Aardappeleters, Joris Vermeer goes in search of the origin of well-known foreign dishes. Monday 9 January was the first episode, in which Joris discovers the history of babi pangang.
Babi pangang is a dish that we order from the Chinese, but the dish is not originally from China. The episode took Joris to Lake Toba in North Sumatra. The only resemblance to the babi pangang that we know here is the pork. For example, the sauce was originally made from pig's blood.
We had no idea. You can watch the episode about babi pangang here.
Curious about the other dishes? You watch De Aardappeleters every weeknight at 19.55 on NPO 2. Tonight in the second episode:spaghetti bolognese, a forbidden combination in Italy.
