Eating vegan can be quite a challenge at first. It goes beyond consuming no meat, fish or dairy. Many products that you would not expect, contain animal substances. Nutritionist and guest blogger Anita Mulderij has made a list of a number of products that are surprisingly not always vegan.
Anita Mulderij:
'1. Worcestershire sauce
This English seasoning can give your supper or soup the extra flair it demands. But vegan it's not the sauce. What not everyone knows is that it contains anchovies. Fortunately, a vegan version is now in the works.
2. Beer and wine
Don't be alarmed, not all types of wine and beer are now excluded. But some variants are certainly not vegan. For example, isinglass (dried fish swim bladders) or egg-based products are sometimes used to clarify wines and beers. An extra check therefore does not hurt. Fortunately, there are several websites that make this easier, for example Barnivore.
3. Candy with icing layer
Some candies are finished with a glossy glaze. This makes it look even more attractive, but there is a difference between different glazes. For example, glaze of carnauba wax comes from leaves of a particular palm tree. Baker's glaze is made from lice.
4. Cereals and sweets with gelatin Gelatin is made from animal collagen. Gelatin is used in many varieties. You will not notice it in terms of taste and structure. Many people know that it is in candy, but did you know that it is also used in certain cereals, pastries, but even in various beauty products?
5. Salty snacks and chips
Snacks and pretzels are not always vegan. If they fall into the 'bacon' or 'sour cream' taste category, a bell will immediately ring. You will also find milk solids or honey in some other chips and snack varieties.
Moral? Be careful what you put in your basket! And pay attention to lists on the internet and follow vegan blogs. There's a lot more to it than you might think, if you just know what to look for.'
