How do you cook rice? This doesn't seem like a difficult question with an equally difficult answer. But did you know that cooking rice is harder than you think? Or should I say it differently… cooking rice is not difficult in itself, but we should do it differently. Because we are currently cooking the rice completely wrong. And our way of cooking rice also turns out to be unhealthy.
That is why today we are telling you what not to do and answering the question 'How do you cook rice?' Unfortunately, the process turns out to be a lot more complicated.

I know of 2 ways of cooking rice that both turn out to be unhealthy. The way most people do it and the way I always do it myself. Learned from my mother.
1 cup rice to 2 cups water together in the pan. Then let it boil and your rice is ready. I never do it that way myself, but this way of cooking your rice also turns out to be very unhealthy.
You put a large amount of water in the pan and bring it to a boil. Then add the desired amount of rice and bring to the boil again. Cook for 8 minutes and then drain. Put the rice back in the pan and let it boil dry or steam for a while. This also turns out not to be good enough. Better than the method above, by the way, but not quite enough.
The correct way of cooking rice turns out to be a more intensive process. Not because of the taste, but to rid the rice of harmful substances.
Why you should cook rice with method 3 has been researched by the University of Belfast.
The arsenic appears to remain in the crop via the groundwater - used for growing rice. Too much arsenic can cause all kinds of complaints and damage nerves and blood vessels. In addition, there is an increased risk of cancer and diabetes due to an excess of arsenic.
With method 1 it turns out that almost all arsenic still remains in the cooked rice. Method 2 is slightly more favorable and leaves 50% arsenic in the rice. Method 3 is the best method, as we already told you, and provides 80% less arsenic in the cooked rice.
I am a real rice lover. In fact… I'm still wearing it today! Cooked the wrong way. I am therefore very disappointed with the results of this research 🙁 , especially of course because the way you should cook rice is a rather extensive method. I don't see myself doing that very often to be honest. Not just for the effort. But mostly I decide what to eat today… for today! Then I can't let it soak overnight!
On the other hand… if my daughter now asks me 'Mom, how do you cook rice?', then at least I know how to tell her the best way.
Tip:A great substitute for regular rice is cauliflower rice. Do you already know that? We love it here at home and it's also super easy to make!
