In 1954, one of the world's most popular cocktails, the piña colada, was first served in Puerto Rico. Today it is considered the island's national drink. For six decades, the tropical drink made from coconut cream, pineapple juice, rum and crushed ice has been reminiscent of white sand beaches and Caribbean sunsets. The cocktail is also still a classic all over the world.
However, Puerto Rican bars argue about where exactly the Caribbean cocktail was invented, an excellent piña colada, but cocktail fans flock all over the island. The refreshing drink tastes particularly good in the following places:
Caribe Hilton
According to legend, the piña colada was invented here in 1954 by bartender Ramón Monchito Marrero, who was officially recognized by the then governor on the fiftieth anniversary of the drink's invention in 2004. Today, piña coladas are still served in the hotel's Oasis Bar, based on Marrero's original recipe.

Barrachina
In the middle of the lively old town of San Juan is the restaurant Barrachina, which also claims to be the original creation of the Piña Colada. While traveling through South America, chef Pepe Barrachina is said to have met famed bartender Ramón Portas Mingot, who later moved to Puerto Rico and invented the piña colada in Barrachina.

Casa Bacardi Rum is the main ingredient in the classic from the Caribbean, which is why the Bacardi distillery Casa Bacardi also serves a very good Piña Colada. Casa Bacardi, which makes one of the world's most famous rums, also offers distillery tours. There, guests learn about the history of Bacardi rum and its production. Of course, visitors can also try various rum cocktails and long drinks here, such as the Piña Colada.

The recipe for a real piña colada
The Puerto Rican national drink is easy to mix yourself to create the Caribbean atmosphere at home:3 cl white rum, 9 cl pineapple juice, 3 cl coconut cream and ice are briefly put in an electric mixer until the ingredients mix into a creamy drink and the ice is crushed. The cocktail is served in a tall glass and garnished with a slice of pineapple and a cocktail cherry.
