Storing wine horizontally prevents the cork from drying out. If the cork dries out, air will get into the bottle more easily and that will not benefit the quality of the wine. When wine is set, the cork stays moist and the wine stays tasty for as long as possible. With wines with a screw cap, it doesn't matter much whether you store them horizontally or vertically.
