One in five Dutch people watches television during breakfast. In addition, 'doing nothing' (17.8%), reading the newspaper (13.4%) and talking with friends, family or colleagues (13.8%) are also frequently mentioned 'occupations' during breakfast. We prefer to do this at the kitchen table or on the couch. This is apparent from research by Campina into Dutch breakfast habits. The popularity of dairy for breakfast seems to have increased in the past five years. Bread and crackers are still by far the most eaten for breakfast, although this research shows that their popularity is declining. They also asked about the ultimate guilty pleasure breakfast, with striking choices including the croquette or smoked sausage sandwich, champagne, donuts and sushi.
The six most striking research results in a row:
1. One in five Dutch people watches television during breakfast.
2. Dairy is increasingly on the breakfast table, bread and crackers less often.
3. A quarter of the Dutch still skip breakfast.
4. Sporting Netherlands prefers breakfast before exercising.
5. A majority of the Dutch eat breakfast out of habit.
6. The majority of Dutch people spend a maximum of five minutes preparing breakfast.
A quarter of those surveyed still skip breakfast. During the week, the Dutch view breakfast mainly as a habit (60.8%) and a source of energy (41.2%). At the weekend, the Dutch more often take the time to enjoy breakfast. More than half of the respondents exercise at least once a week, with a majority usually having breakfast before exercising. Speed is also an important factor for breakfasting people in the Netherlands and not only when it is necessary to exercise. Nearly half of those surveyed spend a maximum of five minutes preparing breakfast. It doesn't seem to matter much to many Dutch people whether it's the weekend:more than a quarter take only six to ten minutes on Saturday and Sunday.
