The Dutch are crazy about rice. 66% of the Dutch eat rice at least once every 2 weeks. Half of them even eat rice once a week. This and more is apparent from research by Lassie, who conducted research into rice consumption in the Netherlands. They were also asked for their favorite rice dish. The outcome was without doubt convincing.
Nasi is the rice classic in the Netherlands
With the vast majority, 82%, the Dutch opt en masse for Nasi, the research shows. The Indonesian classic has been part of our Dutch culture for generations, which makes the number one listing logical on the one hand. On the other hand, it is surprising that more than 8 out of 10 see nasi as a clear favourite. Certainly compared to the number 2 in the survey.
The top five
In the survey, Rice with Chicken Curry follows at an appropriate distance as number 2 with 41%. Sometimes from a bag or a package, but in any case incredibly popular. Followed at a good distance by Sweet and Sour Chicken (20%) and the Italian rice classic Risotto (19%) in 3rd place. This is followed by Fried rice with 17%, often a recipe based on what people have at home. The top 5 is closed together by the Spanish classic Paella and the Thai Curry both with 13%. A surprising newcomer is Poké Bowl. This is a relatively new rice dish for the Dutch, with its roots in Hawaii and is already regarded by young women as a rice classic.
