Which would you rather eat:a gingerbread nut or a spice nut? You probably go for the kruidnoten, because they sell like hot cakes, while the old-fashioned pepernoot is increasingly ignored.
Even though they are kruidnoten, you call them pepernoten. But the real old-fashioned pepernoten have a different shape than kruidnoten. They are not as nicely round as the kruidnoot, but have a somewhat irregular shape and also taste different, more like chewy.

But the old-fashioned pepernoot loses out to the increasingly popular spice nut. For example, De Bijenkorf no longer sells them and Bolletje removed the pepernoot from production two years ago. Pepernoten maker Van Delft also sees declining sales of the old-fashioned delicacy.
But why is the pepernoot less popular? It probably has to do with the way you make them. They are the best when they come fresh from the oven. Cloves have a longer shelf life. And, of course, there are also numerous variants of the kruidnoot that are hard to miss.
