These are the food trends of 2020

While the pizza bases of cauliflower, courgetti and hot dogs were the food trends last year, in 2020 we will see a number of new food trends emerging.

Just like in 2019, plant-based eating is still a hype in 2020. According to food trend watchers Aneke Ammerlaan and Esther Haanschoten, this trend is continuing steadily. “The range in the supermarket is getting even bigger, and restaurants and fast food chains are also going to offer more alternatives to meat,” they tell Nu.nl.

The food trends of 2020

According to the two, these are the food trends for 2020:

Mushrooms

Ammerlaan:“In the supermarket, but certainly also in the catering industry. Mushrooms have a meaty taste, have a nice bite and are easy to prepare. Also think of pulled mushroom or mushroom shawarma.”

Hybrid meat

Hybrid meat is a combination of meat and, for example, peas or pumpkin.

Tempé and tofu

According to Ammerlaan, you see tempeh and tofu on the rise again. “You see it in all kinds of different dishes, with exciting flavors and textures. Not only from soy, but also from beans, for example.”

Non-alcoholic wine

You may already be planning to visit during dry january to leave the alcohol behind. Maybe you can do that more often, because the trend is now heading this way as well. It is sometimes difficult to find an alcohol-free wine that really tastes like wine, but there is more and more choice as the supermarkets increasingly include different types of non-alcoholic wines in their range.

Seltzer

If you've been to the United States, you've probably seen Seltzer before. It is sparkling water that is now also gaining a foothold in our little country. It is available in different flavors, with or without alcohol.
