The weekly shopping. A while ago we made a call among our readers to check their weekly expenditure on groceries. It soon became apparent that this was very different. However, we received so many reactions that I decided to write a nice article about it. But first I'll list my own weekly groceries for you. The expenses then, not the groceries themselves 😉 .

Besides the fact that I absolutely hate it, it also costs quite a bit of money. I honestly had no idea how much I was spending. That's why I calculated the average of the past two months based on my bank account. It's handy that I always do everything with my debit card. I like it a lot! I spend 45 euros a week on groceries for Emma, me and the two cats. Including my bad habits, like every now and then a snack or coffee at the station. But without her diapers, except for an occasional pack of diapers from the supermarket due to bad planning. And also without shampoo, detergent, toothpaste and those kinds of products. Unless it was a good offer.
I thought it was more. Especially now that I'm pregnant and still have to buy other (extra) things. In the past I always had to budget very tight because I had little to spend, 15-20 euros per week for just myself and I really had to make do with that. And that went. Maybe that's why I'm still paying attention subconsciously. Or at least I'm used to choosing the cheaper products. Or maybe I mainly know cheap recipes. In any case, I rarely buy the luxury variant of a product, but I also no longer buy the cheapest bread, for example. We also don't eat meat, but we often eat meat substitutes. I don't even know whether they differ in price from meat.
So that's my picture! I have set out your expenditure on weekly groceries below. And if you read a little further, you'll get some tips for budgeting, if you want.
We've had a lot of responses to this survey! No fewer than 72, of which 1 was a response from a single-parent family. That is why we have divided the number by number of children.

What is striking here is that households with 1 and 2 children spend almost as much on weekly shopping. I personally find this very reassuring. Of course, we didn't collect enough data with our poll to draw any real conclusions, but what we do dare to say is that in many cases, savings could be made on groceries, if desired.
You can learn to budget, haha. So also with the weekly shopping. And secretly there are quite a few readers who would actually like to do a little less. Read along.
Exactly one third of the responses indicate that they use local entrepreneurs, such as bakers and butchers. The other two thirds (almost) only do their shopping at the supermarket. The people who also do their shopping at local businesses appear to spend a lot more on weekly shopping. Not so strange of course, but good to think about:€134 compared to €107 from supermarket shoppers.
In total there was 39 comments about budgeting. About 30% of these readers are already budgeting, 20% would like to budget and 50% say they don't budget. If you do have enough money, then I can imagine that you don't feel like budgeting at all and that you just want to buy what you feel like and what you like.
Only 12.5% of all responses think they really spend too much on weekly shopping. Now 12.5% may not seem like much, but these are really the notorious publishers that have to cut back. In addition, there have also been readers who would like to spend a little less on the groceries they have to do every week. The budget tips below will probably come in handy for them!
The most logical conclusion based on the above table is to have 1 or 2 children, then you would spend the least per week 😉 . If you want to reduce your shopping expenses a bit, you can take the following tips into account.
If you want to start saving on your weekly shopping, the following 'rules' are important. A more detailed article will follow shortly with all the do's and don'ts if you want to budget.
