Bacon-flavored seaweed

Eating bacon without really eating it is the idea of Chris Langdon, a scientist from the University of Oregon in the United States, and his team. Indeed, a seaweed would bring the same taste in the mouth as bacon when fried.

After 15 years of work, researchers at the center for marine studies have succeeded in modifying the natural components of the palmaria , an algae that grows in large quantities in the Pacific and Atlantic. Its derivative, named palmaria mollis has an aspect close to lettuce and would be rich in protein and very low in calories according to scientists.

At the origin of this creation, the researchers had to develop an algae to feed abalones, a kind of shellfish. But the research ended up leading to a completely different project, once they had discovered the taste of it. For the moment it is still in creation and has been tested in vinaigrette and biscuit.

We won't be surprised if we find it soon on our plates.
