Food blogs, cooking programs, culinary festivals and Foodhallen, nowadays everything revolves around food. We pay more and more attention to it, but at the same time we have less and less time to spend on food. That is why TV chef Mathijs Vrieze has listed the most important food trends of 2016. What's hot and what's not?
Say “No” to Waste – We try to waste as little food as possible, by cooking appropriately or reusing leftover ingredients on another day.
Green is the fashion – And that doesn't just mean organic ingredients, but also sustainable crop cultivation or a better life for the animals. The BBQ is therefore increasingly turned on in the winter.
Natural food – Growing your own food in the garden or on the balcony is already the most natural thing in the world. We also want things other than those for sale in the supermarket. We go more into nature. During the wild picking we not only look for berries and fruits, but also flowers, leaves and grass. The fresh superfoods!
The (whole) world close to home – We often travel and discover new and tasty ingredients all over the world that we would like to eat at home. We therefore visit an Asian supermarket or web shops with foreign products more often.
Less sugar – We leave sweet products more often and go for pure. We also see this during breakfast.
Food as an individual – We see more and more than people no longer order exactly from the menu, they like to choose for themselves and determine what they eat.
Beans are not common – We are not going to become massive vegetarians but are aware that eating less meat is better. Plant-based alternatives will therefore become more popular. Beans are a hip alternative. All types of legumes (such as lentils, chickpeas and beans) are a protein-rich and nutrient-rich alternative.
Sweets, but different – As an adult you sometimes want to eat old-fashioned sweets. There is a new trend that puts candy in a culinary jacket. Such as small sugar candies made from roses, blueberry marshmallows, coconut ice cream, disco dip chocolate bonbons and vanilla popcorn. Everything culinary in small portions.
The power of simplicity – Cooking just keeps getting easier. Where adding more ingredients was the motto, it is now:less is more! Making a fantastic dish full of flavor with just a few ingredients, that's the trend.
