Bread is undoubtedly one of the favorite foods of the French, but it is also the most wasted. According to a 2016 study by Ademe (Environment and Energy Management Agency), bread losses and waste amount to around 9% in bakeries. Concretely over one year, these unsold items would represent 150,000 tonnes. And in homes, the situation is the same. Each French person throws away an average of 2.24 kg of bread per year , according to figures from the anti-waste app Too Good to Go.
We're not going to lie to each other, we all have at least once a week bits of baguette, sliced bread or stale sliced bread lying around in our kitchen. Very often, we don't know what to do with it. Either they go straight to the trash or we gladly give them to certain animals. Certainly the loss of freshness of these foods is inevitable and yet stale bread , like other products, is easily recycled and reused in several very gourmet cooking recipes. To make a salty or sweet crumble you can use old bread in the preparation, passing it through a blender. Likewise, with a little olive oil and spices, a baguette that is too hard can turn into croutons for a caesar salad for example. Finally, for dessert or as a snack, you can quickly cook a good French toast . It's simple and above all it's delicious!
