The research has shown that tapas restaurants are especially popular among lovers. The Spanish atmosphere, sangria, riojas and small dishes to share apparently evoke an ultimate sense of romance for many. But steakhouses and Greek, French and Italian restaurants are also a hit with couples in love. Haarlem, Utrecht and Tilburg turned out to be the most popular cities in 2019 for a romantic dinner for two. Given the rising trend and the fact that February 14 falls on a Friday this year, Eet.nu expects even more people to celebrate Valentine's Day in a restaurant in 2020.
Young people increasingly romantic
The increased restaurant visits on 14 February are part of a broader trend. According to research firm Motivaction, Valentine's Day has become more popular than ever in recent years. One in three Dutch people now celebrates Valentine's Day. Young people especially love the holiday. Of the Millennials, 44% celebrate the day of love, with Generation Z this percentage is even higher at 47%. The research by Motivaction also shows that food and drink play an increasingly important role on Valentine's Day. About 40% of the respondents who indicated that they celebrate the holiday, spent money on snacks and drinks, compared to 32% a year earlier. A few years ago, according to various studies, the holiday would still be on the decline.
