All bakers who shop at the supermarket know that dried fruit sold in the baking aid department are expensive.
However, to lower the score by 2 to 3 times, I simply changed departments in my supermarket! I flee the pastry department to join another! I explain everything to you.
Do you want shelled dried fruit and do your shopping at the supermarket? My advice:avoid the Aide à la Pâtisserie section, because the products are sold there at 25 to 75% more than in the Fruit section.
Indeed, next to fresh fruit, there is a section dedicated to dried fruit.
These are sold in different formats than those in the pastry department (generally, 500 g sachets instead of 125 g), with much more attractive prices per kilo!
Some examples with prices per kilo:
Product Px in the Pastry department Px in the Fruit department Difference
Grated coconut €8 €4 - 50%
Golden raisins €16 €6 (organic:€10) - 62.5%
Shelled almonds €30 €15 - 50%
Walnut kernels €38 €23 - 40%
Popcorn corn 9 € 4.5 € - 50 %
Shelled pine nuts €72 €56 - 22%
Shelled hazelnuts €25 €7 - 72%
Puneaux d’Agen 9 € 4.5 € - 50 %
And it works partly for aperitif products, since in this same Fruit department, I find mixtures of exotic fruits (coconut, banana, papaya, etc.) at €6 per kilo compared to €15 in the Aperitif department.
Prices vary depending on the store, of course, but the difference remains roughly comparable.
Because the products are sold in larger formats, I keep the surplus in glass jars (old jam jars for example) until the next cake or bowl (including salad bowl) of popcorn!
