Christmas in Germany

Christmas plays an important role in Germany, especially in the Catholic south. December 24 is the highlight here. Traditionally, everyone (Catholics) goes to midnight mass at midnight. This midnight mass heralds Christmas and is preceded by the eating of a traditional Christmas meal:the Christmas goose. Christmas cookies should of course not be missing.

I can still remember the time when I was little (I was born in Germany and lived there until I was 10) when I was allowed to help my mother with baking. I continued the tradition of baking cookies when I got my own family. Unfortunately, the children are now teenagers and have no interest in baking, only eating. Even if I make 200 or more cookies, they are guaranteed to be used up within a week.

Tip for low budget baking supplies and ingredients

In the Netherlands, baking supplies and ingredients are on the pricey side. If you have the opportunity, I advise you to go to Germany for groceries. There, a packet of flour costs an average of less than 0.50. Ground almonds, ground hazelnuts, baking powder and much more can be found there really low budget. Butter is also much cheaper in our neighboring country. For current prices I advise you to check the German advertising brochures, but it is really worth shopping in Germany.

  • 250 grams of Butter
  • 200 grams Sugar
  • 100 grams Almonds ground
  • 500 grams Flour
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1 pack Vanilla sugar
  • 1 pack Baking powder
  • Roll out flower
Preparation
  1. Let the butter come to room temperature, so that it is easier to knead

  2. Mix flour, baking powder, vanilla sugar and almonds together

  3. Add the rest of the ingredients (butter, sugar and eggs) and knead into a dough (by hand). If the dough is too dry, add a spoonful of milk

  4. Dust the work surface with flour and roll out part of the dough very thinly

  5. Cut out molds and place on the baking tray lined with baking paper (biscuits will expand!)

  6. Preheat the oven to 175°C

  7. Place the cookies in the oven on the middle setting and bake for about 10 minutes (check in between:as soon as the bottom turns slightly brown, the cookies are ready)

  8. Bake cookies from the entire dough and let all Christmas cookies cool down well

  9. In the meantime, the things can be prepared for decorating. Make the glaze only when the cookies have cooled down sufficiently

  10. Decorate German Christmas cookies to your own liking and taste

Make glaze

Glaze is traditionally used to decorate German Christmas cookies. To do this, sift 150 grams of powdered sugar with 1-2 tablespoons of water or, if desired, with lemon juice. Stir well and the glaze is ready to use. Add a little more water if necessary.

Chocolate glaze can also be made:use a little less powdered sugar and add 2 tablespoons of cocoa.

Prefer to make colored glaze? Then use less water and add some food coloring (drops or paste) as needed.

Also tasty:make some real chocolate glaze. To do this, take 100 gr of dark chocolate and melt it au bain marie in a warm water bath. The cookies can be covered with this, but also (half) dipped in it.

In Germany, people also like to eat filled Christmas cookies:take some cooked jam, spread a thin layer on a cookie and cover it with another cookie of the same shape.

The cookies can be decorated to your heart's content, which can be endlessly combined in icing, icing with other decorations including confectionery, small smarties, etc.

Store the German Christmas cookies in an airtight place in a cool place. They have a minimum shelf life of 1 week.
