You can eat this chocolate every day! Wouldn't that be great? An excuse to eat chocolate seven days a week. And not because you are pathetic, menstrual or tired. No, really a good reason to convince everyone that you are right, that it is responsible to eat chocolate every day. A nice piece of chocolate. I have them for you. Because there is chocolate that will please not only yourself, but especially families on the other side of the world. And nobody can be against that, right?
A little explanation about chocolate. Because, what about cocoa? I've never known much more than what was on the label of my chocolate bar:cocoa, cocoa butter, sugar and a few other additives to make my bar taste great. Where that cocoa came from didn't interest me much. Probably somewhere far away, because I've never seen a cocoa bean up close.
But I know better now. Because every day I sit between chocolate bars, Sinterklaas letters, chocolate cookies and cocoa. Because of my work for Max Havelaar. You know that, the foundation that awards the Fairtrade quality mark to products that are fair. For years I worked as a marketer and digital strategist for multinationals such as Philips and L'Oréal and that was great to learn the trade. But now, as a working mom with a family, I have found a new way. One of meaningful work.
That is why I chose conscious living, mindfulness and… fair trade. Fairtrade chocolate in this case. It is a mess in the cocoa industry. I was shocked:child labour, climate problems, inequality for women, inhumane working and living conditions. There's no need for that, right? I want to help these farming families in West Africa. Because it's not that complicated at all. By buying Fairtrade chocolate, these people get a decent price for their cocoa and an extra premium to improve their communities and working conditions. Most farmers earn less than € 0.67 per day. Well, even for an African that is very little!
And so a few good reasons to eat fair trade chocolate every day. Because with Fairtrade chocolate you have something delicious and you help working moms and children in Africa:
