The Michelin guide is an institution in terms of gastronomy:for more than a century, it has listed the best restaurants in the world which have been awarded the supreme distinction:the famous star. Its directors have been interested in the Asian market for a few years now, and it is the Thai capital, Bangkok, that they recently decided to put in the spotlight with a guide specially dedicated to it. Among the establishments in the city that have been distinguished, one in particular has caught the eye:it is a "street-food" restaurant, in other words a typical street canteen, which has received a star. The rather rudimentary “booth” belongs to 72-year-old Jay Fai, dubbed “the queen of the crab and curry omelet”. Only here, a few weeks after receiving the prestigious award, the main interested party wishes… to return it! Although the lines of hungry customers stretch for several tens of meters, the street vendor simply can't take this "unwanted" and "far from welcome" attention.
In addition to the many tourists and lovers of exotic food, the stand's sudden fame has also attracted rather ill-intentioned people like tax agents, as reported by the site Eater . But that's not all:the septuagenarian is struggling to keep up, which forced her daughter, Yuawadee Junsuta, to leave her profession to work full-time at the street canteen, which has since introduced a reservation system. Jay Fai says the newfound popularity of her starred restaurant is not allowing her to make more money, as she refuses to raise prices for fear of losing her most loyal customers. Her food therefore remains affordable, but the owner is forced to spend more money on ingredients to meet the ever-increasing demand. His daughter, meanwhile, insists on the authenticity of the place:“Before or after Michelin, we always see each other in the same way. Jay Fai is still Jay Fai. […] When customers come to us and tell us they love our food, we are rewarded with a million stars every day” . We hope that the shock duo will find a way to adapt to the enthusiasm of the public... It whets the appetite, in any case!
