In Japan, the art of sushi has long been reserved only for men. So much so that even today, the majority of the population finds it difficult to imagine that a woman can be a sushi master. The reasons ? Some think that women's hands are too soft and warm to be able to cook sushi properly, others that their makeup harms their sense of smell... Even more absurd, the son of one of the greatest Japanese chefs had declared that because of of their menstrual cycle, women could not correctly distinguish the taste of food. What shouldn't you hear! To fight against these gender biases, sushi master Yuki Chizui decided to shake things up a bit in her establishment. Result:in the kitchen as in the service, there is not a single man!
The restaurant, called Nadeshiko Sushi, opened in 2010. And if in appearance it looks like the thousands of other sushi establishments in the city, it is in fact one of a kind. Three years ago, the last man on the team left his post. The chef therefore had the idea of no longer hiring any male individuals, making Nadeshiko Sushi the first and only 100% female sushi restaurant. If the initiative was welcomed and the success is there, the chef says that some men come more to make fun of the cooking qualities of the employees than to appreciate the food... Yes, despite all the initiatives that are flourishing in the four corners of the world to fight against sexism, it seems that the end of this scourge is not for now!
