Dairy products such as milk and products made from milk such as buttermilk, yogurt, cheese, cream and butter are perishable products and it is important to store them properly. Read these 5 tips for storing dairy products.
1. Extend the shelf life of milk by freezing it
Milk expands when frozen, so make sure you leave room in the container so it doesn't burst. Don't forget to write the date on the tray. After you freeze the milk, it can be thawed overnight in the refrigerator or placed in a sealed plastic bag and submerged in cold water. Frozen milk lasts about 3 months.
2. Do not store milk and milk products in the refrigerator door
It has the most temperature fluctuations, making it exhale faster.
3. Cheese can keep for 6 to 9 months if frozen in an airtight container
Hard cheeses like Cheddar, Swiss and Monterey Jack are best for freezing (keep shredded cheese in mind too!) Always mark the date on the container. Frozen cheese should be thawed in the refrigerator for 24 hours, and is best used in cooked dishes.
4. Keep butter longer by placing it in the freezer in a plastic container
Salted butter has a shelf life of up to 12 months and unsalted butter about 6 months. Thaw frozen butter by heating it in the microwave for ten seconds until soft. Frozen butter can also be thawed by refrigerating for 24 hours.
5. Store milk products upside down
Milk products sold in cartons such as sour cream, yogurt and ice cream can be stored upside down to prevent mold and ice crystals.
