Flammkuchen resemble pizzas, but on a wafer-thin bottom of bread dough. They have been popular in Germany for years, but Flammkuchen are also conquering supermarket shelves in the Netherlands. With this recipe you can make Flammkuchen yourself.
Did you know… Originally, Flammkuchen were made while the oven was heating. By placing a Flammkuche in the oven in the meantime, the heat was prevented from being lost.
Make your own Flammkuchen
Below you will find the recipe for a traditional Flammkuche, but let your imagination run wild, Flammkuchen are also delicious with other ingredients.
Ingredients
250 g flour
salt
(sunflower) oil
2 large onions, sliced
120 g bacon strips
20 g butter
100 gram Fromage blanc
100 ml crème frache
pepper
nutmeg
Getting started
Mix the flour, ½ tablespoon salt, ½ dl oil and 1 tablespoon lukewarm water. Knead this until a smooth dough is formed. Let it rest covered in a cool place for at least an hour. Melt the butter and sauté the onions, don't let them brown. Pour in the bacon. Whisk together the fromage blanc, crème frache, salt, pepper and a little nutmeg.
Preheat the oven to 280°C. Grease a baking tray and dust with flour. Press the dough onto the baking tray into a large round shape. Brush the dough with the crème frache mixture. Spread onion with bacon over it. Drizzle with some oil. Bake the Flammkuchen in about 10 minutes until light brown and cooked through.
