Bananas produce ethylene, a substance that causes other fruits to ripen (and spoil) faster. So watch out with bananas in the fruit bowl. Although you can also use it to your advantage by placing a banana next to a fruit that needs to ripen faster.
More fruits that produce a lot of ethylene: apples, melon, passion fruit, avocados and tomatoes.
Cucumbers are sensitive to ethylene gas. Keep them away from tomatoes and the fruits mentioned above.
