On the food planet, the trend is “caketus”. Yes, whether on Pinterest or on Instagram, these super realistic cactus cupcakes are popping up everywhere and we have to admit that we take pleasure in devouring them with our eyes… But in reality, these original pastries were imagined across the Atlantic by Jiahn Kang, many years ago. During the launch of her pastry shop in Brooklyn in 2015, this ex-jeweller used Instagram to share her creations, thus using the famous social network as a showcase. Jackpot, the first orders are pouring in and fans are so obsessed that the pastry chef organizes workshops to teach her unique way of decorating her cakes. Today the Instagram account of his shop has no less than 32,500 fans!
If cupcakes decorated with flowers, fruits, animals and other sugar unicorns are nothing new, what makes Jiahn Kang's creations so exceptional lies in the attention paid to color, and to the precision of every little detail. His pastries look like real mini-cacti, and for good reason! The young woman spends between 4 and 5 hours making each cake and makes it a point of honor to paint and decorate them by hand. “The colors are the most important part of the job, if you want to get a really realistic result. Mixing dyes with cream is like painting…” she explains. Faced with this great success, the young New Yorker now also devotes herself to the personalization of assembled pieces, but without neglecting her succulent mini-cacti.
Hmmmm, we would take some for a snack, here!
