The Consumers' Association tested and examined 36 vegetarian burgers and concluded that the quality of meat substitutes is constantly improving.
The burgers were examined for protein, iron and salt content. The taste and structure increasingly resembles that of meat. In some cases, the test panel was unable to distinguish the real burger from a meat substitute.
The 3 burgers that came out best in the test
1. Fresh vegetable burger from Albert Heijn
2. Vegetable bean burger from Goodbite
3. Garden Gourmet vegetarian burger
What about the environment?
Eating meat has a lot of impact on the environment, but how much of an impact exactly? The Consumers' Association calculated how sustainable they are compared to meat for eleven meat substitutes. Replacing a burger with a vegan burger results in five times less CO2 emissions and less use of land and water.
