6 must-have herbs and spices

Of course you have some herbs and spices at home as standard, such as oregano, thyme and cinnamon. Supplement them with these seasonings and you are ready for a huge list of tasty recipes.

1. Curry powder

A blend of ginger, cardamom, coriander, cloves, caraway, turmeric, cumin and black pepper. Fits almost everywhere. Delicious in vegetable dishes and curry, ideal for baking your meat substitutes.

2. Turmeric

It has little taste in itself but complements other spices very well. Indispensable in Asian dishes. It's healthy too:turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Oh yes, you can also make delicious golden milk with it.

3. Smoked paprika powder

No, this is not your ordinary paprika. For this variant, ripe peppers are smoked first and you can taste it:a nice spicy-sweet barbecue flavour. Perfect in Mexican dishes, to season meat (substitutes) or in tomato sauce.

4. Djinten (ground cumin seed)

The spicy taste comes into its own in a curry or something with lentils. Also delicious in combination with soy sauce, soy sauce and in oriental dishes. Nice to know:a teaspoon of cumin a day can cause fat burning three times faster.

5. Ketumbar (coriander seed powder)

In combination with the curry powder, turmeric and jinten, ketoembar forms the basis for curries. The taste cannot be compared to fresh coriander:slightly spicy and nutty with a hint of citrus.

6. Ras el hanout

The name of this North African spice mix means 'the best of the store'. This composition can vary and sometimes consists of more than twenty herbs and spices, such as cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, nutmeg, turmeric and cloves. Ras el hanout is delicious in Moroccan dishes, such as tajines. But beware:it has a strong taste and dominates quickly.
