Teff is ideal if you are looking for a gluten-free, sugar-free, e-number-free and vegan breakfast. A simple, fast and healthy start to the day. Teff can be used for more purposes, so get it at home.
In short
Teff belongs to the grasses and is a good source of fiber, various B vitamins, iron, calcium, potassium and other essential minerals.
Nutrients
Some argue that teff contains more calcium than other grains and can therefore be an interesting product for vegans. The phytic acid content in teff is low, so that important nutrients can be properly absorbed. In addition, teff contains much more slowly digestible, complex carbohydrates than other grains. This gives you a full feeling for longer.
The taste
A teff grain is super small, about the size of poppy seeds, making teff the smallest grain in the world. A handful of teff is enough to seed an entire field! The colors of teff vary from white to red, with light teff having a sweeter taste, and darker teff a somewhat earthy, hazelnut-like taste.
Why teff?
Ensures that there are no spikes in blood sugar levels thanks to the complex carbohydrates contained in teff
Contributes to the production of red blood cells that ensure oxygen transport in our body
Can contribute healthy bones thanks to the mineral calcium
Ideal if you have a gluten allergy, because the grain is gluten-free
Contains many proteins and amino acids, essential for muscle building
Due to the fibers and the complex carbohydrates containing teff make you feel full for longer
What to do with teff?
· You can easily make porridge from teff flakes, which resembles Brinta. You take hot or cold plant-based milk, add a few tablespoons of the teff breakfast, stir it and you're done. Add some fruit and cinnamon and you have a gluten-free, wheat-free, sugar-free, e-number-free and vegan breakfast.
· Teff flour can of course be used to replace other flour. Try using teff flour for making cookies, pancakes, bread, quiche or pie crusts.
· Use teff as a thickener in soups, for example.
· Teff can be cooked in combination with other grains (such as brown rice, millet or buckwheat) so that it can easily be used in a dish with some vegetables. Use the grain:water ratio 1:3. Also delicious in a salad.
