How (un)healthy is banana bread actually?

During the corona crisis, banana bread was baked en masse. Logical too, because it is tasty and healthy. But is the latter correct?

What's in banana bread

Banana bread usually consists of bananas, flour, oil, eggs and a sweetener, such as maple syrup or honey. Since bread normally consists of flour or flour, water yeast and salt, it is actually a banana cake. So the name is not quite right.

How (un)healthy is it?

The bananas make the 'bread' sweet and therefore also add fruit sugars. If you also add sweeteners, such as honey, maple syrup or dates, the sugar content increases enormously. These ingredients may sound healthy, but it's still sugar. An advantage of dates:in addition to sugar, they do contain a lot of fiber. If you use really ripe bananas, you can also omit the extra sugar.

Spelled or wheat flour – which banana bread is usually made from – contains little fiber. It is therefore better to use whole wheat flour. That makes your banana bread a lot healthier. You can also omit the (coconut) oil in the banana bread. There are plenty of moisture-rich ingredients in it.
