Snails, foie gras, oysters, chestnuts, salmon are all foods that are characteristic of New Year's Eve. There is one, however, that we do not think of, and yet it directly touches on the Christmas myth:reindeer meat, of course! If we can understand the "Eww" of disgust (yours resonate with ours at the editorial staff, we're sure of it) at the idea of eating Santa's faithful companions - you'll take a slice of Rudolph at the Red nose ? (ok, we stop) – the concept obviously appeals to our neighbors in the United Kingdom, where it originated. It is the kebab restaurant I am Doner, located in the English city of Leeds, which is offering the little fantasy on its menu for the end of 2018. The famous sandwich stuffed with reindeer meat and called "Döner &Blitzen" was created by the owner of the establishment after a stay in Finnish Lapland. Reindeer meat served with bread is a traditional regional dish eaten by the Sami, an indigenous people.
This is the 2nd year in a row that the tacos (which also contain fresh cream, ham with chili sauce and fries) have been served, after a resounding success in 2017. A vegan alternative is offered, and reindeer meat can be replaced by that of any other species for those whose courage would decrease as the order is taken (and we can't blame them). Paul Baron, the founder of the place, justifies his original culinary choices:“As a chef, I constantly seek inspiration around me, so when I had the opportunity to visit Lapland, where I met other chefs and learned about their cuisine, I didn't think twice. It was there, in the land of Santa Claus, that I saw how important reindeer meat was in the culture. I met a breeder, whose family had kept the same ways of doing things for 300 years, as well as an award-winning chef who helped me master the ingredients and flavors used ". The good news is that for each sandwich purchased (€7.80 the medium, €10.60 the large), 55 cts are donated to associations for children in the county of Yorkshire.
