New research shows there may be health benefits from eating certain types of dark chocolate. Results from two studies show that consuming dark chocolate with a high concentration of cocoa (minimum 70% cocoa, 30% organic cane sugar) has a positive effect on stress levels, inflammation, mood, memory and immunity. While it is well known that cocoa is an important source of flavonoids, this is the first time its effect has been studied in human subjects to determine how it may support cognitive, endocrine and cardiovascular health.
The flavonoids found in cocoa are extremely potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, with known mechanisms to benefit brain and cardiovascular health. Dark chocolate (70% Cocoa) affects human gene expression:Cocoa regulates cellular immune response, neural signaling and sensory perception.
