Apple and lettuce can cure garlic breath

Garlic, you like it or not, but one thing is for sure, nobody likes the smell that lingers around the breath. Now, there is a new solution for garlic lovers. A new study finds that eating raw apple or lettuce can help reduce garlic breath.

Researchers gave participants three grams of garlic cloves to chew for 25 seconds, and then immediately after that water, raw, pressed or heated apple, raw or heated lettuce, raw or pressed mint leaves, or green tea. Thereafter, the levels of volatiles on the post-consumer breath were analyzed through a flow tube.

Raw apple and raw lettuce and reduced breath concentrations of volatiles by 50 percent or more compared to the control for the first 30 minutes. Mint leaves had a higher deodorization level compared to raw apple and raw lettuce for all volatiles. Apple juice and mint juice lowered levels of volatiles, but not as well as chewing raw apple or raw mint. Both heated apple and lettuce had a significant reduction in volatiles. Green tea had no effect on garlic.
