Red onion as a side dish from the oven with thyme and garlic
A delicious red onion dish from the oven this time. Last week it was my turn to cook for friends. Once every few months we have a kind of cooking club and this time it was my turn again. Winter vegetables were on the menu and I planned to add red onions. During the day it occurred to me that I actually liked it much better to really serve the red onion from the oven as a side dish - in its entirety. No sooner said than done. And because it was so tasty, I would like to share the recipe with you.

Oven baked red onion with thyme as a side-dish
The dish is very simple, it just needs some time to cook. Take one red onion per person, preferably not too small. Below you can read the supplies and the preparation.

1 red onion per person
Fresh thyme
Garlic (half a clove per onion)
Butter
Salt

Preparing the whole onion, baked in the oven
So you use at least 1 red onion per person. Depending on what else you have, you may be able to grab 2 per person, but for us one was sufficient in this case.
Preheat the oven to 180°
Make sure the butter is at room temperature (you can also put it in the microwave for a short while, but not too long!)
Peel the red onion
Cut off a piece of the onion at the bottom, so that it can stand properly
Cut a cross in the onion with a sharp knife, but not all the way down. You should actually be able to 'unfold' the onion in 4 parts while the bottom is still attached to each other. So don't open it too hard, because then the bottom will break and that serves less fun.
Peel the garlic cloves and cut them into very thin slices.
Put the slices in the 4 quarters of the onion, where you cut the cross and then put in 2 sprigs of thyme per onion.
Put the red onion in a bowl, stuff the cross with butter and sprinkle the onions with some salt
Place in the oven for about 40 minutes and you have a delicious side dish!
Where do you serve this red onion?
We ate the red onion with winter vegetables from the oven, a ham on the bone and delicious celeriac puree. It was a real party!
