Did you know you can make syrup with poppies?
Everyone knows how to recognize a poppy.
But not everyone knows that they can be picked to make a delicious homemade syrup.
When I was little, my grandmother used to make it. And since I love it, I asked him for the recipe!
A poppy syrup, would you like to try? You will see, the recipe is very simple.
Contents
- 500 g of poppy petals
- 1.5 liters of water
- 500 g of sugar or its equivalent in natural substitutes
1. Boil some water.
2. Prepare the petals.
3. Mix the petals in previously boiled water. Stir until they are "melted".
4. Leave to infuse for a good half day.
5. Filter everything to recover only the juice.
6. Then add the sugar.
7. Finally, bring everything to a boil then reduce the heat to low until the mixture turns into syrup.
8. Transfer the syrup to an airtight bottle.
There you go, your homemade poppy syrup is ready :-)
Easy, fast and economical, right?
Pretty color, don't you think? This syrup will wonderfully flavor a dessert.
It is also perfect for flavoring cocktails. It replaces blackberry liqueurs for example.
- For the petals, pick them as red as possible and leave the faded ones. It's free, of course, but you have to be demanding about the quality.
- Also avoid flowers on roadsides or near treated fields.
You will find beautiful poppies in fields or wastelands from May to July or September, depending on the region.
- To wash the petals, do not pass them under water to remove insects, but use a fine-mesh strainer or a salad spinner.
Shake well until all insects have fallen from the petals.
Like many edible wild flowers, the poppy is also excellent for your health.
First of all, it is an excellent remedy for dry coughs.
It will also help people with mild insomnia.
Why spend money on poppy syrup when you can easily make it yourself?
Poppy syrup can be found in specialized stores for €13 for 25 cl.
In my recipe, you will only pay for 500 g of sugar, which will only cost you €0.50. So you save a lot of money.
And as a bonus, you will earn a certain pride with your guests when you offer them!
